Our Top Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Number One Position.

On the surface, this album might appear closer to a difficult scholarly challenge than the latest pop album from an artist whose last hit was a collaboration with a global K-pop star. Divided across 4 different sections and sung in thirteen tongues, this is a dizzying symphonic opus exploring female mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily change, frequently through the prism of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards on this record, carried by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within a long list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself makes the work of other artists look quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to avoid dry intellectual chin-stroking is nearly miraculous, with complete credit belonging to the artist. While it's not the first time album to blend the past with the present, its ambitions feel much higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. The element that truly raises this fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, is a core spirit of joy. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, the listener nevertheless desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit shines brightly during a stunning Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops away, and we hear a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes in with comedic impact. The track then shifts to the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from none other than herself.

"The charm of this album lies in you rarely quite know—nor wish to know—what it is going to next."

Almost every song finishes in a totally different point from where it began. A track explores the transient nature of fame over a delicate symphony before collapsing in digital cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work starts off dark and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Of Experiment and Pop

A key achievement on the album involves straddling the gap between radical experimentation and broad appeal. It is no surprise that it has achieved her first release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. One track sung primarily in English builds on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly nagging hooks while it spins skyward. This feat is repeated on another expansive track that expands and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms with its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a sharp smile, like a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. This is a deep source of buried treasure that requires time to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. While other major pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous feast where the guests at the table, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about historical figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly inventive visionary.
